Bioart Belgium
Artists
We welcome artists from all disciplines to interact with scientific concepts and ideas. As a way to tell stories or go down interesting intellectual and creative rabbitholes. As well as allow them to interact with new media.
Scientists
Scientists from different disciplines are welcome to share their expertise and enthusiasm. The interaction with artists and designers can help them bring some creativity back into their own methods.
Crafters and Designers
Traditional crafts and modern design practices are invaluable parts, not just of any makerspace worth its salt, but of society. We want to give people a chance to interact with different techniques.
Biohack Academy
Our Biohack Academy is geared towards people wanting to acquire concrete practical lab skills. You will familiarize yourself with all the aspects of the lab needed in bioart. From how to run the PCR-machine, to using the autoclave, but also how to set up a controlled grow environment for yeast, mycelium, algae and bacteria.
Mycelium
We offer the following workshops about mycelium:
– Mycelium: state of play of current research and production cases.
– Learn to grow mycelium and get experience with the properties of the material
Biomaterials
What are biomaterials and how do we make them? Do we design for compostability or sustainability? How do we introduce waste back effectively into the production cycle?
The course runs from design thinking on sustainability to hands-on sessions making algae based bioplastics, including various waste streams. We also look at the potential of bacterial leather. Final results can run from a personalised sample book to a fully realised piece.
Biochromes
We offer the following workshops about biochromes:
– Introduction to natural dyeing of textile
– Masterclass natural dyeing mordant baths
– Masterclass natural dyeing vat method
– Printing methods mordants
– Printing methods resistance dyeing
– Lake pigments, inks and paints
Monthly Lectures
Once a month we invite a guest speaker to speak about their artistic or design practice or their scientific research. The lectures are ‘pay what you like’, though a donation of 15 euro is recommended. Most lectures will be available both in person and online when possible.
Open Lab Days
We announce these though our Instagram and on our discord. These are moments to come ask questions, work on your own projects or come introduce yourselves.

Who We Are
We’re a nonprofit with a growing number of members from different artistic, scientific, traditional crafts and modern design fields.
Our Vision
We’re dedicated to bringing together scientists, artists, designers, students and crafters. We support projects, run workshops, lectures, residencies, summer schools and open lab days.
Our Mission
We connect artists and scientists nationally and internationally.
Our prices are deliberately far below the market expectations. Because we believe science and art are for everyone, without compromising on quality.
Angela Pisani
Founder/ Project Coördinator
I’m your friendly neighbourhood sci-art support. My background is in history, archaeology and heritage work and that has expanded into material science and sustainable design. I’ve got ample experience in education and crafting.
I’m usually the first point of contact for our artists and scientist

Lisa Zianetti
I am a PhD fellowship candidate at the Functional Plant Biology Laboratory at Ghent University. My research focuses on the genetic improvement of crops through metabolic engineering techniques, such as cloning, to enhance their nutritional quality. My work aims to improve diets and ultimately reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and related health issues worldwide.
My expertise lies in plant biotechnology, and I am particularly passionate about projects related to food and nutrition. At Bioart Belgium, I contribute my knowledge as a consultant for plant biology-related projects.
Claire Van Laere
I was introduced into Bioart Belgium at a point where I was in between jobs and trying to
make a fresh start. The tight knit community and the passion of its members motivated me to
become a part of this team. Bioart Belgium offers me the opportunity to promote arts and
science as a whole and to sharpen my online marketing skills in an unexpected way. A boring project doesn’t exist in this organisation and I’ve learned so much since I’ve become
a part of it.
